STOP #10 - Cataloging

The Cataloging Branch is the national authority for cataloging and bibliographic control of U.S. Government publications. The branch provides cataloging and locator services. Staff catalog monographs, maps, and serials received at GPO and, more recently, those government information products available via the Internet.

After DAB personnel classify the paper, map, microfiche, and tangible electronic formats that appear on shipping lists, they forward these materials to the Cataloging Branch. Publications for cataloging are prioritized by type. Congressional and sales materials, titles found on both the GPO and other Federal agency Internet sites, and publications in the news receive the highest priority. Technical and research reports receive the lowest priority. Most publications issued in paper are cataloged within one week of receipt, while microfiche and CD-ROM titles are cataloged within three weeks of receipt.

Each workday, LPS receives an electronic record of the previous day's transactions and this information is then loaded onto GPO's web site. Catalog of U.S. Government Publications records from January 1994 forward appear on the web site. Each month cataloging information runs through GPO's publishing software. After editing and correction, the result is the Monthly Catalog of United States Government Publications in CD-ROM and an abridged paper format.

On the Web, GPO cataloging records provide holdings and shelf location data for publications distributed to depository libraries. They also provide electronic access to works published by Federal agencies via the Internet.

Besides the Monthly Catalog in paper, Web application, and CD-ROM, a set of machine-readable GPO cataloging tapes is supplied to the Cataloging Distribution Service (CDS) of the Library of Congress. CDS sells copies of these tapes to many commercial vendors and library networks. The Cataloging Branch also produces the annual Periodicals Supplement and the U.S. Congressional Serial Set Supplement.
