STOP #3 - The "Joker Box"

Once the pallets of materials have been checked in the Depository Receiving area, they are assigned a number and sent by elevator to the warehouse staging area. Two sample boxes are filled with one copy of each publication received. The boxes represent a full shipment to a regional library. The contents of a sample box are listed on a shipping list.

One of these boxes remains in the Depository Distribution Division (DDD) to act as a physical "sample" of a shipment. This is called the "Joker Box" or "Copy Box." The contents of the other box, called the "Jacket Box" are assigned full SuDocs classification numbers. While the publication is being classified, the preliminary SuDocs class and item number assigned to the publication before it was published may turn out to be incorrect. That change, in turn, may affect the number of copies LPS needs to distribute to depository libraries. However, if everything goes as planned, then a shipping list is completed and a date for the shipment is established.
