STOP #8 - Acquisitions & Classification The tour now moves from the Depository Distribution Division to the Library Division, which performs the library-related functions of the programs LPS manages. The remainder of this tour will be spent in the Library Division. The Depository Administration Branch (DAB) is responsible for acquisition of Government documents in all formats, assignment of SuDocs classification numbers, procurement of depository microfiche, and maintenance of DDIS and the Acquisition, Classification, and Shipment Information System (ACSIS). DAB also procures the microfiche for the International Exchange Service libraries on behalf of the Library of Congress. The Shipment Control and Administration Group keeps track of which library has requested which item number. When a library becomes a depository, its initial item number selections are entered into DDIS. It is this information from DDIS that light only the bins of those libraries selecting a particular item number. Now that the Amendment of Selections process has been automated, depository librarians input their own additions and deletions via the World Wide Web. DDIS also generates the List of Classes, Union List of Item Selections and the Inactive or Discontinued Items List. DAB also maintains the Superseded List. The Shipment Control and Administration Group also prepares the paper and electronic shipping lists. Other staff are part of the Acquisitions and Classification Section who assign SuDocs classification numbers using the ACSIS database, track down "fugitive" publications, and research and answer depositories' inquiries concerning publications.
