STOP #9 - Micrographics

Staff in the Micrographics Section of LPS is responsible for administering a large-scale program of microfiche procurement through contracts awarded to various contractors via a bid selection process. The procurement of microfiche includes contracts for source document conversion where LPS provides paper copies and/or agency supplied microfiche which the contractor subsequently films in order to provide LPS with silver halide master microfiche, silver halide reproducible microfiche, and diazo microfiche.

The major duties of this section include preparation of documents for microfilming by contractors, including determining which publications go to a particular contractor, determining the correct order quantity according to preset guidelines, preparing print orders by entering data into the Procurement Information and Control System, packaging materials for shipment, and maintaining records. Shipping lists are produced by the contractor using the information from the publication orders sent by the Micrographics staff.

Another function of the Micrographics staff is the Quality Control & Inspection process which includes random sampling quality audits of microfiche products, testing, measuring, and inspection of microfiche to determine their conformance with contract quality assurance requirements. This process is done by the use of a variety of test instruments and equipment: microscope, optical comparator, densitometer, microfiche viewer-reader and microfiche blowback printer. Necessary adjustments, set ups and calibration are maintained for proper testing and measurements.

Physical maintenance of archival silver master microfiche and silver reproducible microfiche and their transfer to the Library of Congress and the National Archives and Records Administration require the microfiche to be kept in a controlled environment. The microfiche vault requires set temperatures for maintaining the life span of the microfiche for future transfer.
