Managing Electronic Depository Resources:
Managing Electronic Depository Resources via Web Pages

Valerie D. Glenn
University of North Texas Libraries

Creation:

  • Determine who your audience is
  • Determine the scope of the page
    • Do you have a collection development policy that you could use to determine what subjects you want to concentrate on?
    • Do you want to provide annotations or just lists of links?
    • Will your page be composed of resources on a broad subject or tailored to a specific class / assignment / other focus?
    • Do you link to individual titles or broader resource pages?

Maintenance & Evaluation:

  • How do you determine usage?
    • Electronic reference form, address, or chat service? What are your users asking for/about?
    • Check usage statistics – if they’re kept. Investigate software that keeps track of Web site visitors.

Removing/Discontinuing a Page:

  • Check usage
  • Is it a ‘hot topic’ page that’s no longer hot?
  • Is your content outdated?
  • Is someone else providing the same information or information on the same topic in a way that is still valuable/useful to your users? [see above]
  • Have your user needs changed?
